School Visits

"Yesterday’s program, 'Willie’s Wagon' was a tremendous success; absolutely one of the best assemblies that I have seen!"

~ Tom Kossaris/Principal, Frances Willard School

About School Visits

Teachers are supporting the message of Willie's Wagon by bringing us to their schools. Students love the story and the presentation. Dozens of schools have requested a visit, and we've only just begun!

Willie is excited to be going to school! Not just one school—but several in the coming weeks!

How It Works

We have three presentation programs for Willie’s Wagon in schools.

Program A is designed for a full school assembly. That includes story presentation using enlarged illustrations and a surprise at the end after Q and A.  Run time is 30 minutes.

Program B is geared toward the prek-3rd grade level. That includes story presentation using enlarged illustrations and a surprise at the end after Q and A.  Run time is 30 minutes.

Program C is for older students. It includes use of dvd to show the inspiration behind the book. The discussion includes writing and community service. Story could also be presented in this program.  Runs 30 -60 minutes,

Additional notes:

  • Dvd can be used as part of the presentation or before/after the visit in the classroom.
  • There is no fee for a school visit however pre-orders are encouraged.  Donations to The Heart Connection Cancer Camp and/or Gilda’s are welcome (but not required).

This is how Monroe Elementary coordinated its Willie’s Wagon event:

  1. Our committee (6 members) met and decided on dates and times for presentations.
  2. We publicized this event with students/families with notes home for pre-orders for personalized books. We collected money ( 8 dollars per book) and purchased 85 books from Borders (received school discount).  Mr. Metivier brought additional books and signed them.
  3. (Pre-order form would have teacher’s class name/student name/ “make book out to”/ personalized message if any. Parents may buy additional books for non students.)

  4. We budgeted and bought 2 books per classroom for a give-away. Teachers decided on their own plan to draw for the two books in their classroom.
  5. Library activities included ordering books, shared websites going along with author/book, read book aloud to some classes.  Classroom teachers read also.
  6. After visit, classes talked about what we learned/gained from our guest.

School visits are being scheduled now; please write to gary@willieswagon.com to arrange a visit to your school.

Author, Gary Metivier, shares the story of "Willie's Wagon."
"Gary's enthusiasm brought Willie's Wagon to life at Calamus Wheatland Elementary School. Enlarged illustrations were used to capture the life story of the fictional character, Willie. Students were involved in the story telling process and inspired by Gary's zest for writing. Whether you are big or small, one person can make a big difference, was the message he enlivened us with."
